Director of Science Prof. Dalia Conde, was invited to speak to high performance computing industry leaders and practitioners at SC20: The International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis session “Extinction Rebellion.”
Dalia’s talk, “FIGHTING EXTINCTION CRISES WITH DATA,” introduced the Species Knowledge Index initiative which aims to map, quantify, analyze and disseminate species information to policymakers and conservation practitioners globally. The initiative is wholistic, including mapping previously uncombined data, generating new development platforms, defining workflows, and addressing storage among open biodiversity repositories.
Dalia outlined how the application of computational methods is essential and urgently needed to move toward a healthier planet – since the design and implementation of species conservation strategies rely on directly accessing and analyzing high variety and volumes of information such as species’ genetics, habitat, threats, legislation, climate impacts and human use.
